Jason Covert
My work is built upon the universal foundation of the inevitable occurrence of loss and how that impacts us as individuals and a species.

Traces of our cultural preoccupation with loss and failure can be found in every aspect of our society from our entertainment to our academic pursuits. From Weegee’s crime-scene portraiture of the 30's and 40's, to Warhol's fetishized Death and Disaster series in the early 60's through to today's non-stop glut of reality TV programming and "bad news" media's high ratings, it is seemingly better to look into the lives, loves and failings of someone else, someone other, than it is to look within.

We have fully embraced our "everyone love's a train wreck" mentality - focusing primarily on the losses of others rather than turning our gaze inward and confronting our own more personal losses. My work serves as a lens through which the viewer's attention is refocused on the losses we all face - be that in dealing with the loss of our cultural identities, our gender identities, the very literal loss of information (digital or otherwise) or through the ultimate loss experienced via death.
